PROJECT 2 Reflective Essay

The objective of this project was to create five different collages using the symbols that i created in project #1. In order to to create five cool collages based on different themes i had to view some sample posters on the web to give me a general idea about what direction i wanted to take this assignment. After deciding what type of collages i wanted to create i began playing around with my symbols, creating instances, modifying sizes and color and also duplicating some symbols to create a drastic effect on some of the collages. The majority of my collages have every symbol from assignment #1 pasted within, to add variation of symbols and to take up white space.

For future collages, i plan on using some of the other altering methods such as playing with the abstraction and bold composition, push scale, more overlap and eye direction properties, in order to generate a radical visual experimentation with a fresh and distinguished feeling for each collage.

All in all, my five collages (CRAZY CHRISTMAS, Tight Squeeze, Sports Fun with the Little One, The Three Athletes, and The World of Sports) all have a very distinct layout and message they are portraying. i do believe that with some editing and more symbol modification/alteration this project will be able to capture the eyes of everyone who views them.

Project1-Circles

Anthony Smith

Project 1 Reflective Essay

When thinking about a theme to base my studio work on I researched photos covering straightjackets, food, and circles. Due to technical difficulties and my initial straightjacket work being erased, I decided to go with the circular them. The reason I chose the circular theme is because many of the everyday items people come across are circular or ball shaped. I thought about these items intensively and tried to imagine if the simplest circular item had a different shape, in particular balls used in various sports and activities.

With my sports background, love for food and energetic attitude, I choose to create a picture comprised of 30 “dingbats” that cover my interests. My studio work incorporates several balls used for sports (football, golf ball, basketball, volley ball, baseball, soccer ball, and beach ball), edibles such as donuts and meatball spaghetti, as well as several random abstract circular figures. My intention while completing this project was to use items that I am familiar with, while added my own flavor so that it reflects me. After searching for inspiring images, I chose 10 that caught my attention and met my requirements and the project requirements.

In conclusion, this project reflects everyday circular objects that I felt are important but often overlooked. Most of the image relates to my athletic passion, however; I believe that a narrower theme could have been used to maintain consistency throughout the total project. With the tools and techniques I have learned in prior digital art classes I plan on being able to create projects that will be presentable for all audiences.
